Lauren Feece
Lauren Feece is motivated by the challenge of being present in the
moment. The paintings and drawings she creates are thoughts about the
nature of things, musings on the everyday, and studies of the layers
of meaning just under the surface. Losing track of the everyday
details, life becomes a photo album of decorated daydreams.
Inspired by the connection of the artistic process to ritual, myth,
and meditation she layers: brushstroke, line, swirls, drips,
explosions and movements of paint, birds, clouds, color, flowers,
trees, light, lace, pattern, blooms, webs, waves, vines, twilight,
leaves, and sunsets into ornate visions of passing memories.
Lauren has been exhibiting her work since 1998. In 2002 she moved to
Chicago to pursue a full time career as an artist. After five years of
rigorously exhibiting her work, she felt the need to return to a
simpler life, more connected to the relaxed flow of the natural world.
She and her equally creative partner recently relocated to a run down
farm in Puerto Rico. In this beautiful environment she is learning the
art of maintaining a vegetable garden and wielding a machete. Inspired
by the natural world, she continues to explore life through her
drawings and paintings.

February 2012: Ian Ferguson: "Gold Huffing"
__
Ian Ferguson is a visual artist/musician living in Chicago’s
Bridgeport neighborhood. In this
solo exhibition "Gold Huffing", Ian aims to visually narrate the
dramatic scenarios of the “hermtrogladites”, a term for his imagined
hermaphrodite cave dwelling characters.
Depicted in indecipherable landscapes, these “herms” play out intense
narratives of “Gold Huffing”. The
heroes and underdogs in Ian’s world are possessed by gold and barter for drugs
and other sustenance in a cultural tableaux. In Ian’s words the herms “are still possessed by the power
set gold bricks ablaze in surrounding tar pits in order to inhale the fumes to
get high. The gold fumes crystallize inside their lungs, rapidly shrinking
brain mass, causing radical retardation, consciousness depletion, separation
from motor function and greediness on the highest-level Imaginable.” All this and more will graze the walls
of One Strange Bird on February 3rd, 2012. Come by from 6:00-9:00
for an opening celebration with live dj’s and drinks.
January 2012: Anna Todaro
_Anna Todaro is a Chicago based artist working with subtle narratives in her brightly colored fantastical work. The pop characters in her modestly scaled paintings navigate pastel worlds filled with mythical beasts and anti-heros. The sweet meets with the strange in Anna's world where optimism and beauty reign supreme.
